Wellicious: Where Eco-Friendly Meets Chic. {Review}

Despite spending a ton of time in fitness clothes and worrying about how they performed, it wasn’t until two years ago that I started to wonder where they were made and who made them. In a nutshell, what I learned changed my life.

I vowed that I  would no longer purchase clothing that was harmful to the environment or to the people who made it. In addition to this, I wanted to find clothing that was nice enough to wear both on and off the mat.

While the first part was relatively easy, the second part wasn’t. Some of the lines I found were woefully lacking in the area of style.

My search led to the discovery of Wellicious. This London-based company is all about eco-friendly luxury. (Think of it as a sort of Lululemon for the eco-conscious.) Not only are the pieces made of organic materials—cotton and wool— they are made under fair conditions. (All the items I got were made in Portugal.)

When I recently shared that I was no longer buying clothing from companies that used sweatshop labor, the London-based company Wellicious approached me and asked if I would be interested in reviewing some of its clothing.

I jumped at the opportunity to do so. I won’t mince words. Finding eco-friendly, ethically-made workout clothing has been challenging. At times, it has been akin to searching for the holy grail.

Based in London and founded in 2007 by yogi, Heike Schnell, Wellicious’s, their approach to business may best be described as “slow fashion”.

The mission statement reads as follows:

Wellicious embraces the yogic philosophy using only sustainable materials, manufacturing and packaging and ensures all of its products are ethically produced in Europe. The company also actively supports the SOS Children’s Village in Peru by donating a percentage of its profits to the charity each season, with each member of staff sponsoring their own child from the orphanage.

Formed by a dedicated yogi and mother of three, the Wellicious brand, originally created to cater to just casualwear, has recently expanded to include all areas of exercise, and we reckon this is a great way to amp up your workout wardobe without blowing the budget.

So what can we expect? Core gymwear items are all covered (think leggings, vest tops, oversized tees, zip-up tops and running shorts), alongside form-fitting catsuits in lightweight jersey fabrics, perfect for ballet and Barrecore fans. The accessories range is well worth a look, too, with some luxe-looking yoga mats on offer, as well as a few other gym essentials.

Naturally, the super-soft, breathable fabrics lend themselves to Pilates and yoga, but we think there are some key pieces suitable for any workout.
