Wedgwood and JW Anderson are continuing a collaboration that feels unusually rooted in the interests and craft traditions behind the two names.
For Volume II of their partnership, Jonathan Anderson once again looks to fifth-century Greek mugs from his personal ceramics collection, using the ancient forms as the starting point for a new series of limited-edition objects handcrafted in Wedgwood’s Jasper stoneware in Barlaston, England. Rather than substantially changing the premise established by the first collection, the second installment goes deeper, exploring how color, light and shadow can alter the character of the forms.
That continuity is central to what makes the collaboration interesting. Anderson’s longstanding interest in ceramics gives the project a personal foundation, while Wedgwood brings techniques and material knowledge stretching back centuries. The result sits somewhere between a design collaboration and an ongoing conversation with decorative arts history.
At the center of Volume II is Wedgwood’s distinctive ribbed, engine-turned finish, a technique the company adapted for ceramics in 1763. The process creates a precise, sculptural surface across the vessels, while the matte, biscuit-like character of the Jasper…
JW Anderson and Wedgwood return with Volume II, extending their Greek-inspired Jasperware collaboration.
Four tonal pairings explore light, shadow and landscape through matte finishes and ribbed surfaces.
Handcrafted in Barlaston, the sets are priced at £300 GBP (approx. $401 USD).
Following the success of their inaugural collaboration – which explored unproduced Lucie Rie designs – JW Anderson and Wedgwood have reunited to launch Volume II of their celebrated creative partnership. Continuing a dialogue between antiquity and contemporary design, the new collection takes direct inspiration from fifth-century Greek mugs found in Jonathan Anderson’s personal ceramics collection. Each piece is handcrafted from iconic Jasper stoneware in Barlaston, England, serving as a tangible connection between imaginative modern aesthetics and historic craft expertise.
Volume II presents each mug as the chromatic counterpart to another, pairing darker and lighter Jasper tones to emphasize the sculptural quality of the form. Four combinations make up the release: Mercury Blue/Jasper Blue, referencing Wedgwood’s historic Portland and Jasper colours; Dark Brown/Terracotta, evoking the elemental character of clay; and Marsh Green/Sage Green, informed by the natural landscape surrounding Wedgwood’s Barlaston home. A fourth Shadow Grey/Meadow Green pairing is exclusive to Harrods.
In comparison with the first drop’s color combinations…
Jonathan Anderson’s penchant for craftsmanship is central to every corner of his design universe, carefully curating artefacts and creations that define his artistry. This collaboration with Wedgwood takes notes from the fifth-century Greek mugs in his personal ceramics collection and the hues of the Staffordshire countryside where Wedgwood was founded, tracing a dialogue between antiquity and modernity. The limited-edition pieces are handcrafted from Wedgwood’s iconic Jasper stoneware in Barlaston, honouring the techniques pioneered by Josiah Wedgwood.
“We’ve remained true to the Wedgwood palette, drawing on the surrounding landscape that I believe would have inspired Josiah himself. Wedgwood has always had an incredibly nuanced relationship with colour – it’s never simply about a single shade, but how colours sit alongside and respond to one another. That really comes through in this edition: each set has its own character, yet together they feel part of the same landscape,” says Wedgwood Creative Director Emma Glynn.
Volume II of the Wedgwood x JW Anderson Collection will be available at wedgwood.com and JW Anderson flagship stores.
