Shimano reveals new SPD-SLR pedal system with lower stack height and new shoes to match

Shimano has officially launched its new SPD-SLR pedal system. Alongside updated Dura-Ace and Ultegra pedals and new cleats, there are new top spec S-Phyre and mid-spec RC8 shoes to match. The SPD-SLR pedals and cleats are not compatible with the older SPD-SL system.

Shimano cites a lower stack height, faster engagement, lighter parts and easier adjustment as the benefits of the new system, which is the first major overhaul of Shimano’s road bike pedal system since SPD-SL was launched back in 2003.

The brand says that every contact point in the foot/shoe/pedal system has been re-engineered to increase stability and efficiency by reducing unnecessary movement. The result, Shimano says, ‘is a more direct connection between rider and bike, allowing power to flow more naturally while maintaining the comfort and reliability riders expect from Shimano’.

The new system lowers stack height by 2.3mm. ‘Old’ Dura-Ace SPD-SL PD-R9100 had a 14.6mm stack height, so this represents a reduction of almost 16%. Shimano says that the lower stack height results in a more stable pedalling platform, improved power transfer and improved control of the bike.
