The director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has spoken more about the game’s name, including how it was one of three finalists Square Enix considered for the title.
Prior to the reveal of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, fans were very interested in seeing what it would be called. After all, it’s a huge game, marking the conclusion of the remake trilogy.
Speaking with IGN, director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that ‘Revelation’ was one of three possible titles. However, it has been confirmed that ‘Resolve’ was not one of them. The team did think of the term ‘resolve’ during development, but it’s ‘ketsui’ in Japanese, which “doesn’t have that RE sound.”
Wondering what the other two contenders were? Unfortunately, we’ll probably have to wait a while to find out. Hamaguchi mentioned that the game has yet to launch and feels that “now’s not the right time” as “it’s just going to create some unnecessary discussion and debates online.”
Hamaguchi said:
“So to answer the first question, ‘Resolve’ was actually not considered as one of the contenders for the title, and there actually is a reason for that. The development team that we have for this game is in Japan and consists…
Director Naoki Hamaguchi expects the installation size for “Final Fantasy 7 Revelation” to be around 200 gigabytes, which means that massive additional downloads will be necessary for the physical version.
Square Enix is thus pushing the physical limits of PlayStation discs. Anyone buying the game on disc on April 8, 2027, will receive an incomplete product.
An Ultra HD Blu-ray disc has a maximum of 100 gigabytes of storage space available. This means it has to be divided among... at least two data carriersSquare Enix no longer has enough space. Squeezing a third disc into the case would break the logistical and financial calculations for production. Consequently, the retail version discs now only function as a physical license key with some residual data, while the remaining data must be obtained from Sony's servers.
Pre-pressing onto plastic means strict deadlines during development. The certification process requires the master file to be completed months before the actual sales launch. Hamaguchi points out VGC on the significant advantage of purely digital releases: programmers can adapt the program code up until the release date.
Delivering the software on physical media, however, results in an outdated software version on the…

Speaking to VGC at Tokyo Game Show 2026, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed the game’s file size: roughly 200GB. That’s a significant jump from the two Blu-ray discs Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth shipped on. It’s also why Square Enix confirmed that physical copies of Revelation will need to download extra data on every platform, which is only shipping with a single disc despite the massive size.
It’s probably going to be around 200GB of game. I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.”
Hamaguchi said shipping a physical product was still important to the team despite the size. Asked about the advantages of a fully digital release, he pointed to the flexibility it gives developers late in…
