His brand lives on as a shopping mall mainstay - but designer Perry Ellis was once a titan of high fashion, whose life was cut tragically-short by AIDS aged just 46.  

The beloved only child of middle class parents, Ellis was born in March 1940 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He began his career as a buyer and merchandiser at a Richmond department store, then ascended to the peak of New York's hedonistic high-fashion world during the 1970s and 1980s.

Ellis' slouchy, preppy outfits made from natural materials were a hit with fashionistas, and the designer found himself in the same firmament as clothing icons Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.

But Ellis' life and career ended suddenly and shockingly when he died of AIDS in May 1986. His erratic behavior and dramatic weight loss had worried friends and the fashion press in the months leading up to his passing. Ellis had repeatedly denied being infected with the killer virus, which cut a horrific swathe through the fashion community.
