O'Neill admits 'it might be time' to quit as Celtic manager after brutal Rangers loss

Martin O’Neill has admitted he will consider his future at Celtic after his side’s 1-0 home loss to rivals Rangers in the Old Firm derby on Sunday.

Having lost 3-0 to Rangers last week in the Scottish League Cup, Celtic suffered their third straight defeat in all competitions with another poor result against their rivals to pile the pressure on O’Neill.

Although the Scottish Premiership champions are still top of the table, having won every previous match, the level of performances have come under scrutiny and O’Neill revealed he would speak to the board over his future."I genuinely will reflect and see," O’Neill said after the loss. "It's a matter of whether I can help the team. The manager is supposed to be able to do that. I will look at that this week."I think every single time something crops up and things don't go so well, age plays a part. And, do you know what, they might be right. Graham Spiers delivers Martin O’Neill timeline as he highlights behind the scenes issues

Graham Spiers has given his insight into Martin O’Neill’s situation at Celtic, hinting strongly that a parting could be just days away.

Before the Irishman returned to Celtic last October Spiers had hosted a couple of Q and A nights, recalling his first spell as manager at the turn of the century.

Although now in semi-retirement and far from the daily news beat Spiers is closer to O’Neill than any reporter currently on the circuit.

Towards the end of June Spiers claimed that O’Neill was concerned that Celtic hadn’t issued Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham with coaching contracts.

Three days later, as Celtic returned to training Maloney and Fotheringham had their deals but it was another sign of a dysfunctional football club.

Back at pre-season training on June 26 there were no new signings.

Three days after the first pre-season friendly against Shelbourne Camilo Duran was signed.

Kasper Hogh was added before the opening SPFL match of the season. Two arrivals for one position with gaping holes all over the squad.

In public O’Neill never raised any criticism of the Celtic board.
