Lulu Guinness: ‘Harry and Meghan should just keep their heads down’

With her playfully theatrical style and love of vintage, Lulu Guinness has always stood out from the crowd, a classic English eccentric in the most authentic way. "I'm probably more of an artist than a business person or entrepreneur," she says cheerfully, speaking over the phone from her home in Gloucestershire. "I'm currently sticking oyster shells all over my downstairs loo, making it into a cavern. I was born thinking every single thing I do has to be different from everyone else."

Her handbags are as unique as her loo and serve as refreshing antidotes to the increasingly homogenous bags trundled out by luxury goods conglomerates. "I always used to say that fashion is here to cheer us up," is how she explains the humour in her designs. "What's great is that this is the way fashion is going now. Designers with imagination are having a moment again. I think it's because real people aren't buying a new bag every season. They only really buy things when they're irresistible. If they're going to buy anything new, it's got to be exceptional."
