Studio 54 → Gucci → IPO → LVMH/Kering

Tom Ford

In a white room that exudes the sterile feel of a scientific laboratory, four pairs of Gucci sneakers are running in place, affixed to what looks like an automated stair climber the size of an office printer. There are no feet inside. The shoes, some bearing the signature GG logo, are being put to the durability test, simulating how they will withstand long-term wear-and-tear and what state they’ll be in once they’ve “run” a certain number of kilometres.
This is the Gucci Artlab, where simulations like this test and evaluate Gucci products and materials for longevity, before approval for commercial production. The warehouse-sized building, with a humble exterior — apart from being covered in large vibrant murals — is like a Willy Wonka factory for fashion.
The facility outside Florence was established in 2018 amid a simultaneous brand elevation strategy and company-wide sustainability efforts that were ramping up at parent group Kering. It’s where Alessandro Michele’s designs for footwear…
First came the Gucci Garden Archetypes installation in the brand’s Florence palazzo, a physical recreation of 15 of Gucci’s most fantastical advertising campaign sets. Now comes another Garden, open to the world and time-zone agnostic. Behold, a fantastical virtual Gucci Garden to wander through, offering immersion in the everything-goes universe of creative director Alessandro Michele.
The Gucci Garden is unveiling on 17 May on Roblox, the gaming platform initially popular among pre-teens that is expanding into a prominent metaverse platform for all. Like the IRL version, the Gucci Garden on Roblox offers multiple themed rooms that pay homage to Gucci campaigns but also layers on features unrestrained by the laws of physics.
Visitors enter through a virtual lobby in which their avatars can view, try on and purchase digital Gucci items. Once inside the themed rooms, avatars are transformed into blank, genderless, humanoid-like mannequins that look unfamiliar to those who associate Roblox with rectangular, toylike figures. As people progress through the spaces, their avatars absorb visual elements of each. In the Tokyo Tribe-themed maze, colourful zig-zag lights might become a patterned sleeve. A pool room pays homage to the party scenes of Gucci Cruise 2020. At…
