"Cuba Libre is about textures and colors. We're inspired by the natural landscape of Cuba," says Ben Goorin, a fourth-generation milliner and the owner and CEO of Goorin Bros. hat shop. He pinches the signature indent at the front of a sun-washed-turquoise fedora between his middle finger and thumb. The company, which moved its headquarters to San Francisco in 1949 after getting its start in the back of a horse cart in Pittsburgh in 1895, has released a spring collection of 22 unisex and ladies' hats that capture the exotic - if faded - vibrancy of Cuba.
"We've created a lot of the patterns in the collection based off of how you would experience Cuba today," says Goorin, who cites weathered wooden cigar boxes, peeling paint on Havana storefronts and ramshackle 1950s cars as among the inspirations. The majority of hats in the collection are made of straw, a tropical weather-friendly and suitcase-packable natural fiber.
"You can see the straw fedoras worn most of the year in Cuba, and it's sort of laid back and daytime. It's not just for special occasions but more about everyday life," Goorin says. Cuba Libre's flat-topped porkpie fedoras evoke images of old men puffing…
Goorin Brothers, bold hat makers for four generations, expands its retail presence as hat sales boom. Two new locations opened this month giving this San Francisco based company three hat stores in one city. Goorin Brothers has been headquartered in San Francisco since 1949 selling wholesale and opened its first retail store in North Beach in 2007.
Goorin Brothers is moving into the famous Morrow's Nut House location, Union Square, which recently closed after 70 years. Jackie Helbert, who worked at the Nut House for 37 years, will be passing on the keys to Goorin Brothers President, Ben Goorin, at a ceremony to be held on May 29th at 3:00pm at 111 Geary Street. This historic outpost in the heart of the theatre district will now feature Goorin Brothers personal and old-fashioned signature hat shop service.
The second new location is less than one block from the historic intersection of Haight-Ashbury, at 1446 Haight St. This shop is a vibrant showcase for the latest hat collections which feature the work of San Francisco's local artists and designers. On the 40th Anniversary of the "Summer of Love" the Haight Street location opened its doors on May 1 and experienced instant success.
