Freeloader.com Coming Soon for Real

We've already told you a bit about Freeloader.com (the site may be a bit unstable as it is in beta right now) in an earlier news story. Basically Freeloader.com offers games for free over the web. Users log in and download the games they want at no charge. All of the revenue to support the service is generated through advertising. This amazing model has allowed Freeloader.com to become the fastest growing registration site in the UK since its launch there last May. Now the American beta of Freeloader.com is live and the official site is scheduled to launch this Christmas. We spoke to some representatives of Freeloader.com to give you the scoop and this is what we found...

Freeloader.com offers a neat alternative to the normal distribution channels in this industry. Normally a publisher has to pay for packaging, distribution and shelf space if they want to move product. Freeloader.com does away with the retailer and shipper and posts the game directly on the website for you to download. The ads that are sold for the download go to pay for the costs of development. And since there are much smaller margins here, a game doesn't have to sell…

Datel updates the Freeloader to work on the Wii

Depending on the version of the Gamecube Freeloader you have it may or may not work on the Wii. Datel is clearing the issue with updated Freeloader discs that are Wii compatible. There are four versions of the Wii ready Freeloader and one multi region disc that works with all Gamecubes and Japanese Wii consoles. With the Freeloader you will be able to play Gamecube games from different regions*, but this disc doesn’t provide what everyone really wants a way to play import Gamecube games. On the bright side Datel has been experimenting with the Wii, which means a Wii Freeloader is probably in the works.
