“While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait.”
These were the words of Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, when he announced back in February that Fable would be getting delayed to 2026.
It’s been a long road for the reboot of the much-loved action RPG series, and in a sense a further delay wasn’t entirely unexpected. Microsoft originally announced the game way back in 2020, at the same time it initially revealed the Xbox Series X/S consoles, after which it disappeared for years.
A cinematic trailer starring Richard Ayoade appeared in 2023, setting the tone and at least confirming the game was still a going concern, but it would be another full year before we saw it again, with a second trailer confirming that the game would star Matt ‘Super Hans’ King from Peep Show, and had a 2025 release window.
Which brings us to Craig Duncan’s not entirely jaw-dropping announcement that this release window has now been pushed back a year, to give the development team at Playground Games more time to nail a genre that’s new to the…
After years of sporadic updates and mostly cinematic trailers, Playground Games' Fable reboot is finally heading into what could be its biggest year yet. At this point, only small, very cryptic portions of its story and gameplay have been revealed, but with it officially targeting a 2026 release window, it feels like continuing to keep fans in the dark may no longer be on the table. That makes 2026 a massive opportunity for Fable, with potential big reveals and answers to some of the most lingering questions surrounding it.
With that in mind, 2026 feels like it could bring Fable from backstage to front and center. From deeper looks at its gameplay and world to concrete answers around its release date, platforms, and how closely this reboot sticks to Fable's roots, it's expected to either launch or look like something fully prepared to do so by the end of next year. That said, there's no ruling out another delay—something everyone should keep firmly in mind throughout the year.
The Fable reboot is in an interesting place on the development side, as it is being created…
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 has already put itself in contention to be this year's best new RPG, but Fable has constantly been lurking on the horizon. The new reboot of the fantasy series by Playground Games has all the right ingredients to go toe to toe with KCD2 - well, apart from one rather important thing. It's no longer coming out in 2025. Dang.
That's right, the previously announced Fable release date window of 2025 is no more, and the RPG will now be releasing next year instead. That sucks, because the few snippets of Fable we've seen so far give the impression that it's going to be a good'un. Cameos from British comedy legends like Richard Ayoade, witty humor, stunning visuals both in cinematic moments and in live gameplay, and a sprawling fantasy world will hopefully all combine to create a sublime RPG.
Even though the news of the delay, which arrived in the latest episode of the official Xbox Podcast, is disappointing, said disappointment has been slightly offset by a few more glimpses of gameplay. These include some shots that show off the incredibly detailed environments that you'll find in Playground's interpretation of Albion and some brief combat…
