Exped Ultra 0° Sleeping Bag, Ultra 3R Mat and Ultra Pillow

With a high quality down fill, Exped's new Ultra range of sleeping bags offers lightweight performance in a range of models suiting uses from summer conditions through to winter or alpine mountaineering. Complementing these are a number of new Ultra mats at various weights, sizes and temperature ratings. With spring and summer use on the UK hills in mind, for this review we paired an Ultra 0° Sleeping Bag with the three-season Ultra 3R mat. To complete the set we added a light and compact Ultra Pillow.

I've found this a really good backpack-friendly setup on a number of camps and bivvies, used to date in the cool, wet and windy weather that has so far passed for summer in the Highlands.

There's an environmental angle worth mentioning too, with the use of recycled materials, and Exped's commitment to offsetting the CO2 emitted during the products' lifecycle, something they're now doing for all mats and sleeping bags.

First impressionsThe superbly-engineered Exped SynMat HL Winter M sleeping pad has plenty of considered features that set it apart from its competitors. At first glance, the vertical baffle design and tapered shape don’t look too unusual. But in fact, the two edge baffles are slightly oversized, a design feature that is intended to keep you securely in the middle of the mat all night long.The face fabric is also a soft-touch, slightly fuzzy material, overlaid with a honeycomb grip pattern, further reducing the risk of slipping off the mat. When I tell people that my ideal summer vacation is and will always be a camping trip someplace with a temperate climate and gorgeous scenery, some of them scrunch up their noses. Camping? Don’t you want to relax on your vacation? Indeed I do, and I’m not going to sacrifice creature comforts, especially a good night’s sleep. That’s why I bring the most comfortable camping pad on the market.

The Exped MegaMat Max Duo is an admitted extravagance. This is the Hästens of the woods, an inflatable sleeping mat that cradles you with special stretchy fabric and stands six inches tall. It runs $550 compared to the standard MegaMat’s $400 and takes up more trunk space than anything else I brought on my recent trip to Acadia.
