Bronx to be divided into 2 patrol boroughs, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says

The Bronx will be divided into two patrol boroughs, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced during her State of the NYPD address on Tuesday.

She added it's part of an effort to bring in more officers and resources to each neighborhood in the hopes of driving down crime.

Data suggests the split was long overdue

Tisch said the department will divide the Bronx into the Bronx North and Bronx South patrol boroughs, similar to its split in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, adding residents will start seeing the change in the spring.

"For too long, the Bronx has experienced more crime per capita than any other borough, while operating under a structure that has not kept pace with demands placed on it," Tisch said.

Last year, the Bronx accounted for more than one-third of all shooting incidents and shooting victims compared to the other boroughs, with more major crime than Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, Tisch said.

"They are not asking for special treatment. [They are] asking a reasonable question about fairness and capacity," Tisch said of residents' safety concerns.

Data also shows Bronx residents generated nearly 1 million calls for service last year, which was also more than any other borough.

What we know so far about the Legionnaires’ outbreak ahead of Bronx town hall

New York City health officials will take questions from South Bronx residents Tuesday evening as they continue their investigation into the city’s second outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.

The outbreak in the Bronx has so far killed one person. The city health department began its response on Sept. 10 by testing cooling towers for Legionella bacteria and ordering building owners to clean and disinfect their equipment. Health officials have also canvassed the neighborhood and distributed flyers.

An outbreak that was first identified in July on the Upper East Side killed 11 people. Another outbreak last summer in Harlem killed seven.

Legionnaires’ outbreaks aren’t new for the South Bronx. It was the epicenter of the city’s deadliest outbreak on record in 2015 when 138 people fell ill and 16 individuals died. The crisis resulted in the passage of New York City’s cooling tower regulations, which are often touted as some of the strongest in the world.

But over a decade later, outbreaks are becoming a regular occurrence in the city.

Ariadna Phillips, an educator and founder of South Bronx Mutual Aid, said the latest outbreak only adds to her concerns about the Bronx being disproportionately affected by chronic illnesses, including asthma.

NYPD unveils new $5.8 million Special Victims Unit facility in the Bronx

The NYPD unveiled a new $5.8 million Special Victims Unit facility in the Bronx on Monday, designed to boost investigations into sexual assault cases and offer more support to survivors of such crimes.

The facility, located at 188 West 230th St., will now house the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, Safe Horizon, Bronx Adult Special Victims Squad, and the Special Victims Major Case squad to promote collaboration, the NYPD announced.

Safe Horizon, which offers survivors a slew of safety resources, does not have offices inside the Bronx SVU facility located in the 41st Precinct on Simpson Street.

The old building earned the moniker “Fort Apache” due to the high crime rates in the area.

The new state-of-the-art facility will have several trauma-informed spaces to prioritize the well-being of sexual assault survivors, including a lactating room, a stress reduction room, trauma-informed interview rooms, and a child-friendly area, authorities said.
