Blush is one element of makeup which, for years, has remained sticky territory. After the loud red rouge of the ’50s and hot pink washes lining cheekbones in the ’80s, we finally seemed to have reached a place in time where blush is natural.

More visually akin to the skin’s natural flush than ever, blush, both in terms of colour and formulation, has become warm, muted, and realistic. However, there’s a problem, and it lies in our lipstick.

Bright, loud, and graphic, lipsticks have become increasingly bold, to the point that one ‘natural’ blush doesn’t look all that natural and compatible with these lipsticks. So, what does one do? We explain.

Why and where you go wrong when pairing lipstick and blush

There are two things people do when picking a blush based on theory and not what it actually looks like. The first is to pair similar colours based on the idea that they match. The second is to stick to one’s usual, ‘natural’ blush colour based on the idea that your skin’s natural flush shouldn’t change if your lip colour changes. Both these ideas are wrong.
