"You've Heard of the Elf on the Shelf" refers to a series of image macro in which the phrasal template "You've heard of Elf on the Shelf, now get ready for" captions an image of two things that rhyme with each other. The image serves as a punchline for the caption. In December 2020, a variant of the meme, in which the caption is removed and replaced with the hashtag #MyElf, spread on social media.
On December 3rd, 2016, Tumblr user fuckin-rockets posted a variation with the phrase "You've heard of Elf on the Shelf." Under that caption, they posted a picture of an Ash Ketchum action figure in a garbage can (the implied rhyme being "Ash in the trash"). The post (shown below) received more than 53,000 notes within 10 months.
You've Heard of Bigfoot, Now Get Ready for Smallhand is a word play joke about an unknown rival to the cryptid ape creature Bigfoot. It's the most magical time of year! It's time for The Elf on the Shelf—one of our favorite Christmas traditions—to leave his cozy spot as Santa's sidekick in the North Pole and resume his important role as your household's naughty-or-nice list monitor. There are so many things to learn: whether it's the creative and mischievous situations the elves have gotten themselves into in years past, the awesome new Elf on the Shelf outfits available for your family's Elf, the rules that come with owning one (like choosing a good Elf on the Shelf name), and his daily routine (he stays put during the day, jets to the North Pole to submit his report each night, and then appears in a new spot the following morning).
But first and foremost, you need to know this: When does The Elf on the Shelf come to your house? And when does The Elf on the Shelf…
I'm big on Christmas, with one small exception.
When it comes to twinkly lights, hyped-up kids gifting homemade pressies, and dodgy Yuletide movies that relaunch the career of '90s stars, I'm all in.
I even baked festive cookies with my toddler yesterday! I was wearing red earrings. I'm practically Mrs Claus.
But there's one aspect of the festive to-do list I won't get into. I'm talking, of course, about Elf on the Shelf.
That grinning little mystical spy-doll is not invited into my home.

If you haven't come across Elf on the Shelf, first of all congrats! But now you've clicked this article and it's time you learned. I'm so sorry.
The elf is a little stuffed character that hides in a new spot around the house each night in the month leading up to Christmas. The idea is that the kids find it in a new spot each morning, like an ongoing game of hide-and-seek.
He also apparently spies…
